The conference \u201cDeinstitutionalisation: The Right to Freedom\u201d (24 September 2025) brings together people, ideas, and experiences that shape more inclusive communities. <\/strong>We are introducing speakers who are pushing the boundaries of what\u2019s possible. Follow us and discover who is co-creating a future without walls.<\/p>\n

Elena Pe\u010dari\u010d<\/strong> is one of the most prominent advocates for the rights of people with disabilities in Slovenia and a long-time activist in the field of independent living. Through her work in YHD and beyond, she strives to eliminate barriers in society, strengthen human rights, and create conditions that enable independent and equal life in the community.<\/p>\n

She holds degrees in philosophy and cultural sociology and is a dedicated human rights activist. She is the president and professional director of YHD \u2013 Association for the Theory and Culture of Handicap. During her schooling, she spent 12 years at ZUIM (now CIRIUS) Kamnik, an experience that left a profound impact on her and strengthened her resolve to fight against institutionalization and for independent living, equal opportunities, and equality. She has used her intellect to become a voice for the advocacy of independent living and systemic change for people with disabilities in Slovenia.<\/p>\n

Within YHD, she plays a key role in promoting the philosophy of independent living, which emphasizes autonomy and the dignity of individuals. She is known for her outspoken critiques that challenge government policies and institutional corruption. She is the author of The Freedom to Breathe<\/em>, in which she reflects on her personal experiences and the metaphorical meaning of freedom in expression and action. Her second work, EUtopia<\/em>, raises awareness of corruption and explores EU politics and the Lisbon Treaty.<\/p>\n

Her activism, including public protests, highlights the need for dignity and autonomy and challenges Slovenia\u2019s slow progress in fulfilling its commitments under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).
