As part of the project »Center for Guidance of Deinstitutionalization« at Social Protection Institute of the Republic of Slovenia, we hold a series of webinars aimed at expanding knowledge and showcasing best practices from abroad. This year, we will host four more webinars with international experts.

You are cordially invited to the third online seminar, where lecturer George Nikolaidis from the Institute of Child Health from Athens, Greece will present alternatives to seclusion and restraint.

George Nikolaidis is a psychiatrist. He has a PhD in Epidemiology, and an MSc in Philosophy of Intellectual Disability and Mental Health from King’s College London, and an MSc in Psychoanalytic Studies from the University of Sheffield, England.

He works to prevent child abuse and neglect, protect children and promote public health. He has several years of experience working in psychosocial rehabilitation and mental health services in clinical psychiatry. He has developed and coordinated a day centre for children victims of abuse/neglect. His experience includes the de-institutionalisation of institutions for children such as Lechaina. There, he focused on the abolition of restraint and seclusion of children with intellectual disabilities. His practical experience is complemented by extensive research activities. Since 2005, he has been Head of the Department of Mental Health and Social Welfare at the Institute for Child Health in Greece, and since May 2023, he has been professionally coordinating two day centres for the provision of community mental health services run by the NGO “Thalpos”.

He is Greece’s national representative to the World Health Organisation on child abuse and neglect and is the Chair of the Lanzarote Committee of the Council of Europe (i.e. the Committee of the Parties to the Convention on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse, which monitors the effective implementation of the Lanzarote Convention by States Parties).
