The conference Deinstitutionalization: 30 Years of Fighting for Human Rights – From Institutions to Community (14 October 2026, Hotel Terme Brežice) brings together voices, experiences and knowledge that co-create a future where everyone has equal rights. Find out more about the conference here.
Anže Trček is the director of the Advocacy Center, which operates within the Museum of Madness in Trata. He gained extensive experience with community-based mental health and advocacy while studying social work, during which he participated in internships at various institutions in Slovenia and Serbia, in the organization a crisis team, the implementation of HOPS for the VDC Koper, and other projects.
After successfully completing his studies, he was hired for a pilot deinstitutionalization project at Dom na Krasu, where, among other things, he advocated for the establishment of individualized service packages. At the same time, together with some colleagues, he formed an internal advocacy group and sought to support the residents as much as possible in asserting their needs and wishes, with an emphasis on those who wanted to leave the secure unit.
His path then led him to the Ministry of Health, where he worked for several years on projects related to illicit drugs, and then to the Center for Advocacy, where he works today.
Anže Trček will participate in the panel discussion “Human Rights Under Scrutiny—Violence, Accountability, and Deinstitutionalization,” where he will speak about advocacy as a protection mechanism and about the rights violations that advocates for persons with disabilities encounter.
